Allison Fisher Defeats Kim Shaw in US Open Finals
#1 ranked Allison Fisher considered not playing in this year's U.S. Open. A diagnosis of skin cancer and subsequent surgery left her in the position of playing that week, or recovering. She chose to recover on site and defend her U.S. Open title.
Allison defeated Helena Thornfeldt in a 7-6 nailbiter to make Sunday's semi-finals, while Vivian Villarreal defeated newcomer Pam Treadway 7-2. Allison and Vivian squared off in semi-final #1 and Allison won 7-5.
It was a surprising upset when #14 ranked Kim Shaw defeated pre-tournament favorite and winner of several 2006 titles, #2 ranked Karen Corr! Shaw then defeated #3 ranked Monica Webb to earn her finals berth against fellow Brit Fisher. Kim shot a first-class game but couldn't manage the determination of the defending champ. Allison won by a final score of 7-5.
